The Author of All

God made mankind because God loves stories.”
Elie Wiesel

I have a friend who is facing some serious health challenges. My friend is also a writer, and (lucky me) one of my best Beta readers. She is my “make it logical and consistent” cop on the beat.
When I lamented the illogicality of her predicament, as she had lived a model healthy lifestyle, I also grieved that, unlike the stories we writers conjure where all the pieces must fit and make sense, we don’t get to fully author our real life stories.

Her response blew me away. “I'm very thankful The Creator is in charge of my story. No matter what life brings and even if it appears from the outside that the story doesn't have a happy ending, I know, if I let him be the author, the story will be a love story and the joy at the end will be beyond imagination.
Unlike me, my friend was raised in a devout Christian home, and to the best of my knowledge has never wavered from that course. Her academic training is in logic (mathematics, to be specific) and she is rational in every way. But reason had not made a dent in her house of faith.

I am not so blessed. My road is paved with doubt and fear of ceasing control, even as I know this sense of control is illusionary.
Ah, the joy of writing. There we are the authors.

It's funny because I always say that while I'm the author, my characters write their own stories. I don't lead them much at all. I often wonder if that's the case for God, but since I've seen His hand and presence in my life, I don't really think so. He guides me more than I guide my characters.

Oh, my. I just love your friend's response. Talk about trusting God and just being ... For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. (Jeremiah)

I needed to read this today, this first day of Sept. And may your own doubts and fears melt away, Mirka.

Very nice. Have to admit I sometimes envy people who are full of faith in a higher being - sadly, I've been a skeptic all my life, but certain things in nature do make me think there must be a greater power than people somewhere, somehow.

Interesting that your friend's skill set includes mathematics. The more you know, the more you see God in things that appear so mundane and normal.

Faith is powerful.

That's a wonderful post, Mirka. I can always count on you to explore the deeper implications of something. Yes, I think it's so true that things can look very different from the inside than they do from the outside.
